Burns
There are many different kinds of burns, they can be caused by chemicals, heat and electricity. These burns cause three different levels of severity.
1st Degree- This type of burn effects the top layer of skin. Usually red and painful, an example of this is a sunburn.
2nd Degree- This type effects the top two layers of skin and cause blistering to the area. This is the most painful type of burn.
3rd Degree- This type of burn effects all three layers of skin and is painless due to nerve damage. The skin will look waxy, charred and/or fake.
What should you do...
- Seek medical attention and depending on the severity and amount of surface burned you should call 911.
- Brush of power substances (if a chemical burn) then rinse and cool with plenty of cool water. Be careful not to over cool large burns, this may cause hypothermia.
- Avoid putting greasy ointments on the burned area unless instructed by medical personnel. Greasy ointments tend to lock in the heat of the burn causing further damage.
Important Note
Most burns continue to worsen over a 24hr period. Keep in mind that burns to the face, joints, hands, feet and genitalia are always considered emergent when burned.
